Report of the Addis Ababa team meeting

July 22, 2012, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Coordinators: Rahel wondie, Bekalu Metaligne and Heran Nurga

  1. Updates about the group given to all: includes how it all started, the vision and mission of the group, the current situation of the school, the immediate and long term plans, achievements to date. This inspired the members to become active participants.
  2. How to add more members in Addis: lots of ideas were reflected regarding this, the group agreed to track people through the current members (one person will contact 4 people they know on average and will take responsibility to make them active participants). Currently there are only 12 participants and the plan is to reach 50 members within two weeks. We also planned to identify celebrities and people working on the media from Tanahaik so that we can advocate about Tanahaik more easily.
  3. What we can do to support the school: as an immediate plan the group discussed books for the library and computers. The plan is to first bring more people to the team and the team will decide\design a book or computer project in Addis and will provide to the school. The whole process will be discussed with the team in Bahirdar
  4. About the group: the group needs to be a legal entity so that we can process all activities within the legal framework(example issues raised conducting meetings is not easy if we are not legally registered, membership ID, monthly contribution, receipt for people’s contribution, having coordination office, keeping documents of the group)
  5. Fund raising: this is not started yet in Addis but people are optimistic, the current members are willing to contribute but are afraid it may not be enough. The plan is to try and contact new members and to organize one better organized meeting to raise fund for the books\computer for the school, the specific date will be decided on a meeting of coordinators after two weeks.
  6. The school: the observation of the founding members is the only evidence we have so far therefore this team recommends a formal baseline study to be conducted about the school and the students. This will help to identify the real issues of the students and write proposals to organizations working on school improvement and raise bigger funds to the group plan.
  7. Challenges faced: people are not aware of what the group is all about and hence are not passionate to participate(as expected); there is a legality concern to conduct meetings, receipts should be available to give to people when they contribute since not everyone can go to the bank, we could not attend the second skype meeting with our members abroad mostly because the time was not convenient but the members decided to discuss the convinient time with the skype coordinators and attend the next meeting on the skype (tana-94). All in all, we agreed we should work closely with the team in Bahirdar and abroad so that we can achieve our goal within short period of time possible.
